Astley Smythe Scholarship Essay Competition

The Content Gap Past Student Association is pleased to announce the Annual Astley Smythe Scholarship Essay Competition. We are challenging students to conduct research, be creative and display their ability present information verbally and in writing based on a given topic/theme.

Essay Topic theme for the academic year September 2022 – June 2023: Leadership in the Community

CRITERIA FOR QUALIFICATION:

Applicant MUST be an enrolled student in grade six at the Content Gap Primary School

Applicants must research and write an essay of approximately 500 words outlining why he or she deserves this scholarship. Specific reference to the life and work of the late Astley Smythe and what aspect of his life he/she can adapt towards making a contribution to the community of Content Gap.

Applicants MUST present in person the completed essay in front a panel of judges. Applicants will be assessed based on content, creativity, grammar/structure and presentation.

All written essays must be submitted via email to contentgapprimarypsa@gmail.com by May 26, 2023 at 5pm Jamaica time.

VALUE OF SCHOLARSHIP:

JMD $20,000 for the grade 6 student with the best essay and presentation

AWARDING CONDITIONS:

The award of this scholarship will be done at the annual graduation ceremony of the Content Gap Primary School and the amount will be disbursed towards school fee and the purchasing of school items upon the presentation of the necessary vouchers to the scholarship committee.

All cheques will be made payable to an educational institution or supplies store.

All essays must comply with the following contest rules before submission:

Only one essay may be submitted per student.

No literary form other than an essay will be accepted.

The essay must demonstrate the conduct of research and a sufficiently detailed summary.

The essay must be 500 words maximum, double-spaced, (12pt Times New Roman), and numbered pages with one-inch margins excluding bibliography and title page.

Submitted essay must include a Bibliography and Title Page showing applicant’s full name, class/grade, teacher’s name, date of submission, theme/topic and the essay question.

The essay document should be saved as Astley Smythe Essay Competition 2022-23 – Name Of Applicant

References in the essay should be included and clearly identified.

Entries must be submitted in Word or PDF format.


NOTE: Information on Astley Smythe is available in the school library. Students can also do their own research in the community.
